BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Commission on Marine Resources has postponed taking action on a proposal to ban the use of basket dredges to harvest oysters.

At Monday's commission meeting, DMR Executive Director Jamie Miller said they'd like more public input before a final decision is made. Some fishermen claim the use of basket dredges does too much damage to the oyster reefs.

An estimated 20 to 30 percent of Mississippi oyster fishermen use the basket dredges.

The DMR expects to hold a public meeting on the issue before commissioners take a final vote.
