PEARL, MS (WLOX) - Oxford is ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps and the Chargers proved why they are tops in Mississippi. George County, ranked No. 14, faced Houston Roth, the Chargers number two pitcher.
Oxford grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a single to left field off the bat of Grae Kessinger. Sage Mullins scored to give the Chargers the lead they would not give up.
Oxford led 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth a when Ben Bianco hit a fly ball to center, George County's Ian Goff made a nice diving catch but the ball was deep enough to plate another run.
In the top of the seventh, George County had two runners on base. Roth would put out the Rebels fire with a strikeout, and he would record 10 K's on the day and had a no-hitter through five innings.
George County and Oxford clash in game two Thursday night at 7 at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
If the Rebels can secure a win, George County would force a third and final deciding game on Saturday.
