BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Biloxi's new mayor is still in the process of moving into his new office at city hall. However, Mayor FoFo Gilich said he is hitting the ground running. Mayor Gilich said he's already spent considerable time learning the ropes of his new job.

Exactly one week after winning the runoff election, the new mayor attended his first council meeting. Biloxi city council members gladly rolled out the welcome mat for new mayor FoFo Gilich.

Council President Felix Gines said, "Thank you, Mayor Gilich on your selection and election. We welcome you to the city. It's going to be a great working relationship."

"We don't have an acting mayor. We don't have a mayor elect. We actually have a mayor," said George Lawrence of Ward 1. "Mayor Gilich, thank you for being here. Glad to have you."

Tuesday's council meeting was part of what's been a hectic schedule for Mayor Gilich. Since taking the oath of office on Monday morning, he's been reviewing city projects and touring municipal buildings in different parts of Biloxi.

Mayor Gilich said "There was no lull. After the election I think I lost another three or four more pounds between the election and today's council. My wife has been bringing me a little milk shake every afternoon so I can keep my strength and my energy up, but it's been great. It's what I look forward to doing," said Mayor Gilich.

One of his first official acts as mayor was to recognize the hard work of public works employees. He wants all city workers to know he considers them a vital part of Team Biloxi.

"We're going to make sure that they're appreciated, and we're going to compensate them as best we can," said the mayor. "I think they have a realistic picture of, over the course of time, what we're faced with, and what are the unknowns. As soon as we can figure out this is the real path then we'll make sure Team Biloxi will be rewarded and appreciated."

Mayor Gilich said he has some ideas for new programs for the city which he will introduce at a later time.
