HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The murder weapon used in the shooting death of Hattiesburg Police Officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate has been recovered.

Tuesday afternoon, three days before the weapon was recovered, Marvin Banks misled authorities to where he allegedly threw the murder weapon. He led officials to a section of the Leaf River down the railroad tracks from where the stolen police cruiser was ditched. The weapon was ultimately found along Railroad Street according to MBI.

The search began Monday, after authorities discovered they did not have the actual murder weapon from the Saturday night shooting.

Authorities with metal detectors, dive teams, and FBI Crime Scene Recovery Agents searched areas around Bushcman Street, Front Street and all around the train yard near the Historic Hattiesburg Train Depot, and both days they came up empty handed.

According to Mississippi Bureau of Investigation the weapon was recovered Friday along Railroad Street by a maintenance crew that was cutting grass.

The weapon recovered was a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.

It was tested at the State Crime Lab in Biloxi and the ballistics confirmed it was the weapon used in the shooting of the officers.
