MHP memorial service held to remember all fallen officers

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Family members and friends joined with state leaders and law enforcement this morning to remember fallen officers.

The memorial was held at Mississippi Highway Patrol headquarters at 10 am.

The service was an opportunity for the entire community to remember the sacrifice all officers give while serving and protecting.

Words of encouragement and red roses were placed, as each fallen officer's name was read aloud.

Governor Phil Bryant has proclaimed this week, May 11-15 as "Police Week".

Mississippians are asked to show appreciation to the officers who risk their lives to keep us safe.

According to the website, Officer Down Memorial Page - www.odmp.org, 44 officers nationwide have lost their lives in the line of duty this year.

That number includes Hattiesburg Officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate.

Officials say an officer's sacrifice is something the general public often forgets about.
