Endless learning possibilities at Biloxi Family Resource Center
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
There's a colorful, bright little spot - a world that nurtures learning, tucked away on a quiet Biloxi street. You'll find it behind Lopez School on St. John Avenue, just north of Keesler Air Force Base. Biloxi's Excel by 5 coalition runs the Biloxi Family Resource Center. It's a hidden jewel that is helping so many little ones grow up happy, healthy, and ready to learn.
"We are elated that we can make a difference in children's lives," said Susan Hunt of the Biloxi Excel by 5 Coalition.
At the Biloxi Family Resource Center, the possibilities are endless. Whether you're racing cars, building towers, or counting farm animals, creativity flows through every room.
"We've tried very very hard to set our center up so it's like going to school," explained Hunt. "And so, so many of our children, they tell their parents, 'Hey let's go to school today!'"
"The block room is great," brags Jennifer Shay. "You can't really replicate - some of the stuff, we have similar things at home, but the block room is this huge space and tons of blocks. We don't have anything like that."
Shay and her four year old son Jackson just started coming to the center. As a military mother who moves around a lot and is accustomed to public preschool programs, she says this place has been a true blessing.
"I'm so excited. It's like a preschool environment and it's great since Mississippi doesn't have universal preschool. But this gives you the same type of environment, the same resources," said Shay
Haaland Teagita and Timathy Torres are newcomers to the center. They, too, are stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, and thankful to have an outlet for their children to interact with others.
"I'm excited to meet other moms," boasted Teagita. "I'm excited to have him meet other friends that he could possibly play with."
The social engagement, and use of a wide variety of manipulatives are priceless learning opportunities for children birth to age five. Yet everything offered at the Biloxi Family Resource Center is absolutely free to parents.
"It thrills me to no end, to see and to know that we are making a difference in children's lives," said Hunt. "Because that's what it's all about. It's about our children."
The Biloxi Excel by 5 Coalition also hosts free events, in which every child receives a free book. To view the Family Resource Center's hours, as well as a calendar of upcoming events, just click here.
