JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Chancery Court Judge Neil Harris has ruled that he will not recuse himself from the lawsuits filed against Singing River Health System, according to Attorney Harvey Barton.
Barton is representing an SRHS retiree who has filed suit against the hospital system for under funding the employee retirement plan.
Hospital attorneys called for Judge Harris to step down, pointing to an active lawsuit he has filed against Jackson County over beach property in Ocean Springs. They say his role in that suit would prevent him from remaining impartial in a case against the hospital system.
Last week, a hearing was held so that Special Master Al Hopkins could hear arguments for the Judge Harris' recusal and make a recommendation to the judge. Harvey Barton said that recommendation was made on Tuesday and shortly after Judge Harris announced he wouldn't be stepping down.
