PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Authorities have identified the skeletal remains found in a wooded area in Pearl River County last month.

According to Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage, a DNA test determined the remains belong to Sydney Niemann, Jr. of Pearl River County.

Authorities say Niemann lived in the area where the remains were found near Rock-Ranch Road before he disappeared. Officials estimate he was last seen in May of 2012.

The cause of death is still undetermined.

While a shotgun was found near the remains, Turnage said there was no evidence on the bones of fractures consistent with a shooting.

The Pearl River County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation.
