Tree giveaways to celebrate Arbor Day

The supply of trees at the D'Iberville Public Works Department is dwindling as people pull up to claim their free saplings. The department is giving away more than 100 Willow Oak, Crab Apple, Southern Magnolia, Red Maple, and River Birch trees Friday in honor of Arbor Day.

You don't even have to get out of your car and brave the cold temperatures - you can just pull up and wait for crews to load you car. D'Iberville's Public Works Department is on Seventh Avenue. It's first come, first serve while supplies last.

Similar tree giveaways took place in Gulfport and Pascagoula.

At the Pascagoula location, a limited number of one-gallon Pecan and three-gallon Chickasaw Plum trees will be available. Seedling species include: American Plum, Grey Dogwood, Sumard Oak, River Birch, Pecan, Ash, Walnut Tree species include: Chinquapin, Catalpa, Fringetree, Mayhaw, Sawtooth Oak, Cherrybark Oak, Live Oak, Baldcypress, Blueberry Bush, Waxmyrtle, Southern Red Cedar, and Redbud.

Arbor Day is always celebrated in Mississippi on the second Friday of February. Arbor Day became an official day of observance in Mississippi in 1926.
