Biloxi developer, landowner face off in court over trees

At times, the battle over which Biloxi trees to save, and which ones should be chopped down has gotten somewhat contentious. An example of that is what's become a legal fight between a hotel developer and a Biloxi property owner.

In past stories, we told you about Sonny Bahkta and his plans to build a Hyatt Place Hotel on Highway 90. Bahkta got the necessary city approvals to remove 37 trees from that site. We also told you about Carroll Campbell. She owns a neighboring Highway 90 property, and she's not the least bit happy that Biloxi said trees could be removed for the hotel.

Campbell appealed the tree permit to the city council, and then to circuit court. Tuesday, Campbell forwarded WLOX News a separate suit filed by Bahkta's attorney, which alleges abuse of process.

The hotel developer claims in court papers Campbell's delay tactics are adding another $1.5 million to his hotel project. And he wants damages awarded by the court.
