GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Harrison County is one step closer to giving the old downtown library to the City of Gulfport. The structure was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, and has sat vacant since the storm nearly 10 years ago.

There was talk of tearing it down, but a citizens group has lobbied to salvage the historic structure.

Monday, Harrison County supervisors approved a resolution which conveys ownership of the library to the city.

"What that will allow to happen is they can apply for some grant money, $7 or $8 million worth, for work there," said Joe Meadows, who is the Harrison County District 2 supervisor. "The City of Gulfport is ultimately going to convey this to the GRC the Gulfport Redevelopment Corporation.

The transfer of the library building from the county to the city will happen as soon as the county receives some final paperwork from FEMA.
