PRCC student charged in dorm room sex assault

POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

A student at Pearl River Community College is under arrest after police say he sexually assaulted a female student in her dorm room early Sunday morning. School officials aren't releasing the identities of either student involved, but said the suspect is in the Pearl River County jail awaiting an initial court appearance.

PRCC Director of Public Safety Doug Rowell said the male student went into the female's room around 2am Sunday, threatened her, and assaulted her. He was arrested early Sunday afternoon on campus, less than 12 hours after the alleged assault.

He has been suspended from the college, pending resolution of the case.

PRCC President, Dr. William Lewis, issued a statement Monday expressing regret and concern for the victim.

"PRCC has always put the safety and security of our students as the highest of institutional priorities," said Dr. Lewis. "To have an incident of this nature occur on one of our campuses brings a heightened awareness that in spite of our efforts to provide for the safety of all of our students and employees, we must continuously work to evaluate and improve our effort in this regard. You can be assured that no stone will be left unturned as we research this incident and evaluate improvements for the future."
