Two prescribed burns today will torch Jackson County terrain

The U.S. Forestry Service will be in Jackson County today, setting fire to the brush near Latimer.

A news release just sent to WLOX News says forestry crews will burn 394 acres of vegetation east of Old Biloxi Road and south of Scarborough Road. That burn area is about three miles north of Latimer. Bayou Billie is the east boundary of the burn.

A helicopter will hover over that area around noon, and ignite the fire from the sky.

At the same time, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is planning to conduct prescribed firing operations today at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge. The potential burn site represents 394 acres located just south of the east end of Quave Road off of Highway 57 in Jackson County.

These are two separate prescribed burns. They just happen to be the same number of acres, in relatively the same vicinity.

The forest service says these fires are necessary to protect neighborhoods for more dangerous fires. It also improves the habitat for threatened and endangered species, recycles nutrients back into the soil, and promotes the growth of trees, wildflowers and other plants.
