Smoke will be visible today in Stone, George Counties

Helicopters will fly over Stone, George and Perry Counties today, intentionally sparking fires in two wooded areas. Those fires will be carefully monitored by the U.S. Forest Service.

A spokesman for the forest service says the agency will be burning 540 acres on the Stone/George County line east of Ramsey Springs. Gene O'Neal Road in George county is the east boundary of the burn.

A second burn engulfing 500 acres in Perry County will be ignited about five miles northwest of Benndale.

The forest service has contracted with a helicopter operator to do an aerial ignition on both burns.

These fires are necessary to help the vegetation in those wooded areas grow.
