MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

Art McClung has finally made it official. One month after being confirmed as the new Police Chief of Moss Point by the Board of Alderman, McClung was sworn in Thursday night during a ceremony that drew nearly 100 law enforcement officials, friends and family.

McClung could have used the swearing-in ceremony as the new Moss Point Police Chief as sweet revenge. But for him, it was verification that his selection was not from his own will.

"It means that Moss Point is in good hands because God has placed me here to make this city as safe as we can," he said. "So this day means the world to me. But, I'm just ready to work. I'm a servant and a servant works. And so I'm here to work for the citizens and make Moss Point a beautiful city."

After former chief Keith Davis left to join the Department of Marine Resources in June 2014, McClung was named interim chief.

McClung could have left the city in August when the board appointed Calvin Hutchins as new chief. But Mayor Billy Broomfield vetoed the action, and McClung continued as in the interim role.

Thursday's ceremony had plenty of plaudits, singing and humor.

"As far as the criminals go... I feel sorry for you," said Ken North, the retired director of investigations. "I really do. I would say watch out. There's a new chief in town."

McClung said his priority is drug enforcement because drug crimes lead to other crimes. He has the full confidence of both the board and mayor.

"“First of all, he's a God-sent person," Broomfield said. "He's very committed to the Power of the Lord. Secondly, he's even more committed to the city of Moss Point and making sure that we reach the next level with our Moss Point Police Department."

The board approved McClung unanimously. Along with McClung, the board appointed Brandon Ashley as deputy chief.

"I think Art is a good choice," said Alderman Wayne Lennep. "I think he's shown us in the last six, seven months as interim chief that he can do this job. He's done a good job. I think it was good that the board to come together and reflect back and look at his performance and look at the needs of the city and come to an agreement on what we needed to do going forward."
