Biloxi Shuckers make backup plan if MGM Park isn't ready

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Shuckers General Manager Buck Rogers was hoping MGM Park would be ready for the season opener, but he's realistic and has a backup plan.

"You have to talk about hotels in both Huntsville and Biloxi, buses, the travel involved and the moving of players from one city to the other," said Rogers.

Despite construction moving along swiftly, logistical issues forced Rogers to come up with an alternative if MGM Park isn't ready.

"In fairness to the rest of our teams, the league, the umpires, our parent club the Brewers, we had to make a backup plan," said Rogers. "We have the lease back in Huntsville to play some games, possibly 15 games. We're going to move some of our games to Pearl, MS, and a series down to Jacksonville, FL, to help accommodate some travel needs."

If you take a look at the construction site, you can clearly see that MGM Park has taken shape.

"We're pretty confident that the folks at Yates and the Dale Partners and the City of Biloxi, they've been working overtime and they're way ahead of schedule. I believe the move-in date will be a lot sooner than anybody expects."

The Shuckers open the 2015 season in Pensacola on April 20 against the Jacksonville Suns.

Rogers added that he has been negotiating with the general manager in Pearl and said when the Shuckers play in Pearl the first week of May, anyone from Biloxi will be able to get in free for that series.

Rogers says once he receives official word when MGM Park will be able to open, he will notify the league and within seven days, all Shuckers home games will be played in Biloxi.
