GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

City officials in Gautier have two million reasons to smile. That's the amount of money a national hotel chain has spent purchasing and renovating the old Surburan Extended Stay Hotel. It's now called Sun Suites of Gautier.

Company officials said they chose to expand into Gautier because of the city's potential. The new town center complex is set to break ground later this year on the site of the old Singing River Mall, and will eventually offer shoppers dozens of new retail choices.

"With all the industrial parks and the business here in the area and the growth that's projected here in Gautier, that was one of the main reasons why we decided to come here to this area," explained Bryan Schwab, Regional Director for Sun Suites.

One of the first things on General Manager Damaris Johnson's to-do list is to spruce up the property.

"We're in the process of painting the exterior part of the property. We're re-carpeting the rooms. There are a lot of renovations going on here," Johnson said.

The key to this chain's success in the city of Gautier is getting the word out. And they promise they're going to do just that, according to Regional Sales Manager Sherry Emmerke.

"We're going to be working with the Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract our seasonal travelers. We're also going to be doing a lot of campaigning for the industrial that's in this area," Emmerke said.

This investment is a big hit with city leaders.

"We need these companies to come in to us, for us to grow," City Council Member Mary Martin. "They bring in a lot of business here."

Some of that business may show up at the nearby Sonic, where Judy Brewer is the manager.

"It means a lot. A lot more people, a lot of different people from out of state, so it means better sales for us," Brewer exclaimed.

Sun Suites of Gautier has 126 units. It's located on Dolphin Drive, just north of Highway 90.
