GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The scene was shocking. Two children were discovered locked in dog kennels at a Gulfport home. That led to the arrests of the mother, father and grandmother Tuesday.

Patrick Braddock, Brittany Braddock and Pamela Davis are charged with two counts of felony child abuse.

Gulfport narcotics officers originally came to the house on Hardy Avenue Jan. 28, to serve an arrest warrant on Patrick, but they say what they saw was egregious.

Brittany and Davis were arrested at the home. Patrick was served at the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility.

“First and foremost, the concern was for the children,” said Lt. Adam Cooper, with the Gulfport Police Department. “We worked with DHS to get the children taken out of the situation. We conferred with the DA's office and culminated in an arrest last night.”

The case began after a suspicious activity complaint was made at a community watch meeting. Police praised the program for leading to the arrests.

Patrick remains in jail on a $100,000 bond.

Davis was released Tuesday after posting a $20,000 bond. Brittany was released Wednesday after posting a bond of the same amount.

Brittany said the police got the situation “totally mixed up” and “made it look worse than what it was.”

Long-time neighbor Anne White disputes the charges of child abuse and says the children often played in the kennels, which are used for a Rottweiler and another, smaller dog.

“If they went in, they went in of their own volition,” White said. “They did not put them in there. They did not lock them in there.”

Cooper said there is no doubt this was a case of child abuse.

“It's egregious. It's infuriating to keep your children like this. They all lived in the home, and they were all aware of what was going on,” said Cooper.

Police would not go into any details about any other signs of abuse or the condition of the house, but they did say that the cages were not the only evidence collected to support the charges.
