First coast athletes commit to colleges

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Gulfport High wide receiver Jonathan Nance will wear the black and gold. Nance will play football for the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg. Nance is a 6-1, 180 pound wide receiver. Nance led the Admirals with 63 receptions for 743 yards and 6 touchdowns. He averaged 11.8 yards per catch.

Gulfport High School held a signing ceremony inside Bert Jenkins Gymnasium at 8:00 Wednesday morning. Three Admiral football players are heading to major universities.

Richaud Floyd, a 5-11, 172 pound quarterback/wide receiver will take his talents to the SEC. WLOX sports reporter Tyler Bouldin just tweeted Floyd just signed a scholarship to become a Missouri Tiger.

Floyd moved from wide receiver to quarterback in 2014. He completed 111 of 183 passes for 1,467 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In 2013 he was one of the Admirals top receiver but coach Eddie Pierce needed a quarterback and Floyd got the call, even though his future in college football will be at wide receiver. He's also talented enough to play defensive back.

At that ceremony, J.J. Smith, a 6-1, 190 pound defensive back/wide receiver inked his letter of intent with Ole Miss. He also signed with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Smith snagged 34 passes for 449 yards and 6 touchdowns, netting 13.2 yards per catch. Smith added 163 yards rushing on 8 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. On defense he made 5 tackles. J.J. also ran back 5 punt returns for 163 yards, that's an average of 32.4 yards and had 1 kickoff return for 90 yards.

Pascagoula held an 8:30 signing ceremony. A.J. Giardina just tweeted from there. He said three Panthers football players who will attend Division 1 colleges. 

Highly-talented wide receiver Jaylen Smith signed with Louisville. The 6-3, 207 pound senior has all the tools to develop into a premier receiver in the college ranks. The passing game at Pascagoula was a little inconsistent in 2014 and Smith led the Panthers with 386 yards receiving on 27 catches and 6 touchdowns. Jaylen also ran back 4 kickoff returns for 122 yards, netting 30.5 yards per kickoff.

Keith Joseph, Junior, a 6-3, 235 pound defensive end/linebacker decided to follow in his dad's football foot steps and is heading to Starkville choosing the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. Joseph made 57 tackles for the 9 & 4 Panthers under head coach Lewis Sims, including 5 sacks.

Jauan Collins, a 6-1, 300 pound defensive tackle chose Southern Miss. In 9 games Collins made 50 tackles.


Two St. Stanislaus linemen announced their college choices around 11 a.m. Offensive lineman Ryan Gibson is heading out west to play for the California Golden Bears. Defensive lineman Jordan Bradford chose to stay closer to home. He will play for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
