BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Biloxi Ward 3 Councilwoman Dixie Newman has worked hard to develop a Hiller Park committee that will find ways to improve the park. Her latest project includes a partnership with Mississippi Power to install new LED lighting, which will save the city about $7 a month.

"The LED lights are the new technology. They're very energy efficient. They usually use about 75 percent less energy, but they provide a very clean, white light," Mississippi Power District Manager Stephen Schruff said.

Installing new lights in the park is just one of many improvements Newman is working on to bring life back into what she considers a hidden jewel in her city.

"This to me is like the central park of Biloxi, and for years, the city has let it go down, and a lot of people are actually excited about the improvements being made because you know Hiller Park was the main place to hang out back in the day, and people are just getting excited to be able to do that again," Newman said.

Starting Monday, Mississippi Power crews will be removing 109 lights in the park and installing 86 LED lights along the roadways.

"Because the LED lights are more directional and provide more uniform lighting, we're able to do that and in the end, still have better lighting in the park," Schruff said.

Schruff says he anticipates the light installations to take no longer than a week to complete. He says the company is happy to help improve a place that so many love.

"Mississippi Power is pleased to be working with the City of Biloxi on this project. It's going to improve the park. There's a lot of work that's being done to make this park the great place it can be, and we're just glad to be a part of that," Schruff said.

"It's amazing. The best thing is seeing the smiling faces. It means the world. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it," Newman said with excitement.

The new LED lights will require a lot less maintenance from city work crews. They are more durable, have less of a glare and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
