D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - A murder suspect is behind bars after he allegedly gunned a man down at a D'Iberville apartment complex Saturday afternoon.
D'Iberville Police Deputy Chief Clay Jones said Marquis Saunders is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of 37-year-old Jamel Jones.
Officers responded to the shooting call at Amber Apartments on Amber Road around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. That's where Clay said officers found Jamel outside, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Jamel was pronounced dead at the scene.
Clay said Saunders left the crime scene in a vehicle after shooting Jamel. Witnesses at the scene gave investigators a description of Saunders and the vehicle he left in.
Clay said Harrison County Sheriff's Deputies found Saunders driving on Highway 67 near D'Iberville High School. That's when deputies stopped Saunders' car and took him into custody.
Saunders is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
D'Iberville Police Chief Wayne Payne said he would like to thank the citizens who got involved and pointed authorities toward Saunders.
He also thanked several law enforcement agencies for a quick response that helped bring Saunders to justice.
