BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It's amazing what you can do with 75 tons of sand. A group out of Florida has been building a huge sand sculpture at Edgewater Mall.
Jill Harris with Sandsational Sand Sculptures enjoys this unique art form.
"I like the fact that I can make something on such a large scale in such a short period of time," said Harris.
They started with 75 tons of sand, and after just ten days, the sculpture stands tall, sporting a coastal theme with an emphasis on outdoor, summertime fun.
"This year's theme is come out and play. You swim and go to the beach or swing in a tire swing and fly a kite. It's all the things you do outside," Harris said.
The sculpture has come to life at center court near Dillard's. People love watching the sculptors, and Harris enjoys the reaction.
"I've done my job when someone comes up to me and says, 'Wow.' It's nice to know you're introducing people to sculpture. Maybe they won't go to a museum, and this is a friendly way to let them see art" said Harris.
The company, from Melbourne, FL, has come to the Coast and created sand sculptures at Edgewater Mall for 10 years. There is actually plenty of international demand for this work.
"We go to Japan and all around Europe and America. From here, I'll be going to Holland," Harris said.
The sculpture will be on display at the mall through May.
