OXFORD, MS (WLOX) -
It's always tough to win on the road in the SEC and on Wednesday Mississippi State was playing well enough to secure a road victory at Ole Miss.
The Bulldogs jumped out quickly and led 16-4. The Rebels came right back thanks to a 17-2 run to take the lead. Mississippi State would get back in the groove and led 32-28 as both teams headed into the locker room at halftime.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 45-32 second half lead with 16:29 remaining in the game.
Remember we said it's tough to win on the road. Ole Miss would out score the Bulldogs 15 to 8 and led 64-62 after two free throws by Jarvis Summers.
Summers would come up with a huge play that helped the Rebels get a little breathing room with 3:15 left in regulation. He drew a foul on a 3-point shot. The ball went through the net and Summers would complete a four-point play giving Ole Miss a 71-65 advantage.
Summers, the Rebels second-leading scorer failed to score in the first half but closed out the second half with a team-high 22 points.
Craig Sword led MSU with a season-high 27 points, including a career-best five 3-point buckets.
Ole Miss connected on 22 of 55 shots from the field (40.0 percent), 6 of 20 shots from 3-point range (30.0 percent) and 29 of 37 shots from the foul line (78.4 percent).
Mississippi State hit 30 of 54 shots from the field (55.6 percent), 7 of 18 from 3 point range (38.9) and 6 of 11 foul shots from the line (54.5 percent).
MSU out rebounded Ole Miss 34-31.
The Bulldogs dropped to 9-11 overall and 2-5 in SEC play. The Rebels improved to 13-7 and 4-3 in conference play.
