LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - A big race was held on the Coast Saturday. It wasn't the Indy 500, but to dozens of kids and parents in Long Beach, it was just as exciting.
Cub Scout Pack 321 hosted its annual Pinewood Derby at the First Methodist Church Saturday morning. The Pinewood Derby is a tradition that dates back to the 1950s.
Saturday's race allowed the scouts to build and design their own cars. They then competed against their dens to find out who had the fastest car.
Organizers say the competition is more than just fun and games.
"Starting off as a tiger in first grade, the cars are really not as intricate. But as they grow and learn, they take the knowledge that they have learned at the Cub Scouts and all the requirements as well as school and science to become better at racing their cars. So, in turn, it is taking something fun and sneaking in a lot of good educational things," said Pack 321 Cub Master Tash Solangi.
Saturday's winners will go on to compete in the district championship next month.
