Southern Miss "Cooks" Up Late Inning Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) _ Jeff Cook hit a homer in the ninth inning and a game-winning single in the 10th to give Southern Mississippi an 11-10 victory Saturday over Charlotte. Southern Miss (15-11, 2-3 Conference USA) trailed 10-7 in the bottom of the 10th when Chris Dunn and relief pitcher Allen Winningham drew one-out walks and scored on Bobby Garner's double. Brad Montgomery tied the game at 10 with an RBI single, setting up Cook's final hit. Charlotte (9-12, 2-3) led by five, 6-1, going into the sixth inning.

The 49ers got two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and seemed in control of the game. But the Golden Eagles fought back with three runs in the sixth to cut it to 6-4. Southern Miss scored one in the seventh and finally tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. It was Southern Mississippi's second straight win after dropping five consecutive games. Winningham (1-0), one of five Southern Miss pitchers in the game, threw one scoreless inning for the win. Jacob Chaney (2-1) allowed seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss Charlotte.
