The numbers are astounding. 458 Hancock county children now in Department of Human Services custody. There is a shortage of foster homes in Hancock county.
Some are now in emergency shelters. Others taken to Jackson. These kids are often already traumatized. Moving them long distances can add to their stress as they adjust to new people, new schools, new surroundings. The children are the innocent victims in a scenario that has played out far too many times in Hancock County.
We applaud the 17 men and women volunteers who are committing the next six months to serve on a task force. They will look for ways to provide the foster care when needed and hopefully find ways to slow the need for foster care for so many Hancock children.
