BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A recent marine patrol stakeout overnight ended with the arrests of two suspected crab trap thieves.
Department of Marine Resources Assistant Marine Patrol Chief Rusty Pittman told the Commission on Marine Resources that several Jackson County fishermen had recently complained about stolen crab pots. Officers organized a stakeout operation at a Jackson County boat ramp and after several nights, they caught the suspected crab culprits.
"In the early hours of the morning, they were sitting at the boat ramp," said Pittman. "Two subjects came in in two boats, with unmarked crab pots on the boat. And also over 300 pounds of crabs."
The two suspects were taken to jail and issued citations for theft. If found guilty, they could be fined up to $500.
The confiscated crabs were sold to a local seafood market.
