CMR considers changes to oyster dredges

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Commission on Marine Resources is considering changes in the type and weight of dredges used by oyster fishermen.

Chairman Richard Gollott says he'd like to do away with the so called "basket" dredges and reduce the weight of legal dredges from the current 140 pounds to 115 pounds, which was the limit prior to 1997.

Some oyster fishermen say basket dredges are too damaging to the reefs.

After a brief discussion, commissioners tabled the issue until the DMR staff collects more data about the impact of basket dredges.
