BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The Biloxi Fire Department will soon be able to purchase hundreds of smoke detectors and give them away to community members in need. The nearly $6,000 donation is coming from a local restaurant, which happens to have a special tie to firefighting.

Firehouse Subs is a chain restaurant that first opened in Jacksonville, FL. It now has more than 850 locations, including one in Biloxi.

According to local franchise owner Scott Statham, they are a company that likes to give back to the communities they serve, especially local fire departments.

“The company was started by two brothers, Chris and Robin Sorenson, in 1994. They were firefighters, and they had a passion for food and service, so they decided, ‘Hey, let's start a restaurant,'” said Statham.

Recently, the Biloxi franchise was able to award $5,700 to the Biloxi Fire Department to help it purchase smoke detectors.

“The donation is made through our public safety foundation, which was created in 2005. The mission of the public safety foundation is to provide lifesaving equipment and services to first responders throughout the country,” said Statham.

Capt. Michelle Crowley, with the Biloxi Fire Department, says the donation could not have come at a better time.

“The state fire marshal's office has been able to donate smoke alarms through an assistance to firefighters grant for the last two years, and they have now ran out of smoke alarms. The Firehouse Public Safety Foundation was able to provide us with 350 smoke detectors,” said Crowley.

Even though the restaurant is known for its sub sandwiches and firefighter theme, Crowley wants people to know they care just as much about serving up delicious sandwiches as they do about helping the community.

“We're very thankful that they have that capability for us. It's going to save a lot of lives, because smoke alarms are the most important thing that you could have in your home,” said Crowley.

If you are in need of a smoke detector or know someone who is, contact the Biloxi Fire Department at 228-435-6200.
