ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - Some Jackson County students will be heading to Columbia, MS, Friday to help with tornado recovery efforts.
Thirty seniors from St. Martin High School, along with two teachers, the principal and a counselor, plan to arrive in Columbia around 10 a.m. They will work with members of Woodlawn Assembly of God Church to remove storm debris from area neighborhoods.
Principal Dina Holland says she made an announcement asking for volunteers and within an hour, all 30students signed up.
"I saw the images on the TV, obviously, and didn't take me long to remember the folks that came in to help us in Katrina, and what greater thing to teach students than how to be good humans," said Holland. "We're going to roll up our sleeves, and we don't care what the weather is like. We're going to help these people, because they need us."
The teen volunteers range from football players to debate club members. Holland hopes this will be a great opportunity for the students to get to know one another.
