No New Casino Plans For Area Next to Small Craft Harbor

Here's a Biloxi restaurateur's description of the area between his shop next to the small craft harbor and Beau Rivage. "Beautiful location," Joe Lancon said. Then he added, "Something needs to be done" to it.

Something is being done. Demolition crews are in the process of tearing down a vacant waterfront condominium. Once the debris is gone, sources tell WLOX News the land will remain vacant indefinitely. Talk about a casino docking near Beau Rivage remains just that -- talk. According to one Biloxi attorney, there has been recent interest shown in the property. But no deals are in the works.

Milimax of Mississippi owns the Harbor View condominium property, and this vacant spot where the Mariner's Harbor condo once stood. Milimax also has leases on three other sites between the small craft harbor and the old Gold Shore Casino.

The past few years, Milimax has been talking with a company called Full House Resorts to use the different properties for a Hard Rock Resort and Casino. Today, a Full House attorney told me the project is still a possibility. But getting money to build it is still a major obstacle.

If a developer can get over that financial hurdle, Joe Lancon would certainly welcome a new neighbor. "My business is strong right now," he said. "But it would be stronger with a casino there." Lancon is hoping somebody will step forward and beautify the property next to his restaurant.

City leaders tell us that in order to keep its casino options open, the Milimax company makes about a hundred thousand dollars a month in rental payments.
