GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The hunt is on for a man Gulfport police consider armed and dangerous. According to police, 23-year-old D'Juan Levern Holloway is wanted for capital murder. He's accused of gunning down 19-year-old Ray Howze III outside the M&S convenience store on Old Pass Road Sunday just before 6pm, and then taking off in the victim's car.
As the search continues to bring Howze's killer to justice, his family and friends are trying to come to grips with their loss.
"I haven't slept since I saw his body laying on the pavement," Howze's friend Larry Redd said. "It's unbelievable to see your best friend of seven, eight years just laying there with no feeling."
Redd is heartbroken over the loss of a young man he considered a brother.
"Since I moved here I had a step family," Redd said, "but that was my real family, they took me in also. I call his grandma, grandma."
Redd said Howze was a loving, genuine person who enjoyed making people laugh. In fact, just minutes before he was gunned down, Howze gave Redd one final chuckle.
"I was just watching his snap chat, it made me laugh, he tickled me, and next thing you know I get on Facebook and all I see is 'Rest in Peace, Ray Howze,'" Redd said.
Redd said his friend was shot five times.
"Ray didn't have a problem with anybody," Redd said. "I couldn't tell you not one person that he had a problem with."
Redd and Howze had big plans Monday to take a step in pursing a dream they have had for several years now. The two were going to visit a recruiter to talk about joining the military. But now Redd must plan his future without his best friend.
"It hurts," Redd said. "I have never felt this type of pain in my life. Never. There will never be anther Ray Howze."
Holloway is 5'6, 150lbs and has black hair. He was last seen driving a white 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. If you have any information on where Holloway is, you are asked to call Gulfport police at (228) 868-5959 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787-5898.
