Pascagoula shipyard pays $144K fine over dust and paint

PASCAGOULA, MS (AP) -

A Pascagoula shipyard is paying a $144,545 civil fine for violations including allowing sandblasting particles and paint to become airborne.

VT Halter Marine agreed to pay the fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

The shipyard, owned by Singapore Technologies Engineering, has been one of several industries along Bayou Casotte that has faced complaints from nearby neighbors.

A Nov. 13 order published by the department says that Halter committed a total of 44 violations documented in a May 2014 inspection. Other problems included failing to properly store, label and dispose of paint and solvent, failing to prevent soil erosion, and failing to keep down dust.

VT Halter agreed to conduct an engineering study on containing sandblasting particles and paint and to complete a paint building by June 30.
