BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Since Biloxi's White House Hotel was brought back to life after sitting vacant for more than 30 years, it has continued to receive a lot of attention and the attention won't stop any time soon.
Not only are guests impressed with the modernized, historic hotel that sits along Highway 90. So were the editors of "Southern Living" magazine, and for that, they gave the hotel a spot on the top 10 list of The South's Best New Hotels 2015.
General Manager Cono Caranna said it was a huge surprise to him, and he didn't know about the great news until it hit social media.
"We're blown away. It's amazing to have this recognition so soon off the bat. It's incredible, and we can't be thankful enough," Caranna said.
Caranna says one thing that sets his hotel apart from other hotels in South Mississippi is its rich history.
"We just try to tell the history of the property to everybody that comes through and let them know what it was, what it is today," Caranna said.
First timers and even frequent guests say they appreciate the clean renovations that have been done, and the history that's embedded behind these walls that keeps them coming back.
"The beauty, of course. The atmosphere. It's just a classic icon for the Coast," hotel guest Len Derouen said.
Even though the nomination came as a surprise, Caranna says he hopes this accomplishment brings even more publicity for the hotel.
"We really don't know what all it's going to entail, so we're excited to see the response. Last night was the initial rush that we got from some of the coverage, and that was great. Hopefully more good things come from the achievement," Caranna said.
The editor of the magazine suggests that guests reserve a room on the third floor where, "a sprawling outdoor terrace with lounge-like seating and a full bar overlooks the Gulf."
