An Ocean Springs Fine Dining restaurant is encouring men to loosen their tie and women to kick off their heels. Chandler's wants people to come try their lunch and dinner a little more casually.
Owner Vikki McElhose says, "It's a fine dining atmosphere, but I want it to be a casual restaurant. I want more people to come here and realize that we have fresh seafood, casual costs, very, very reasonable."
McElhose purchased the Highway 90 restaurant in Ocean Springs one year ago. Some of the recipes have lasted from the previous two restaurants, but McElhose, wanted to add some of her favorites, as well.
"They're recipes that go way back from Troby's to Germaine's and then we have a few of ours now that we've added. And there all incorporated together," McElhose says.
When you walk in the door at Chandler's Fine Dining, not a whole lot has changed in the foyer, but one thing obvious is the name has changed. And it's because of Vikki's father, the inspiration behind the name...Howard Chandler Harlan, Jr.
"We wanted to name it Howie's Fine dining, but that wouldn't go real well. So, we decided to go with his middle name which Chandler means provider of food on a ship, and I figured what better fitting name to go along with the Gulf Coast down here. So we came up with my Dad's middle name," says McElhose.
McElhose takes advantage of the Gulf Coast's abundant seafood source.
McElhose says, "We call it in, we get it today, we serve it tonight. We only get so many, and when we're out, we're out. And, I just think that's a real nice touch around here."
From delicious crab cakes and cream of crab soup to pastas, steaks and even lobster....all of the dishes are made to order and from scratch.
Vikki says, "I really think if the people would step inside, they'd realize it's really, really a great place to come."
