GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The place where Russell Bangs died on New Year's Day was the place where he was remembered Saturday evening as a warm hearted person whom everyone loved.

Bangs, a 54-year-old homeless man, was found dead in a drainage ditch on the north side of Crossroads Shopping Center in Gulfport. The coroner ruled he died of accidental drowning.

About 40 friends and supporters gathered for the vigil near the area where Bangs was found to share food, music, blankets and warm memories of Bangs.

At the center of the memorial was a cross. At its base was a guitar, the one Bangs played just a week before he died. There was also special music presented.

The program was organized by Lynda Favre and her Shepherd of the Gulf organization that works with the homeless on the Coast.
