Columbia tornado victims have 212,222 reasons to say thank you

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - On a frigid Thursday in South Mississippi, people in towns like Columbia and Ellisville looked around in disbelief. Tornados raved these communities two weeks ago. Yet, some properties still looked as if the twisters just touched down.

At that same moment, hope for these tornado victims was pouring into Raycom Media television stations up and down Mississippi.

WLOX, WDAM, WLBT and WMC are all part of Raycom Media. We used our television stations, and our digital platforms to help raise long term recovery funds for the Pine Belt tornado victims.

We asked you to reach into your pockets and lend a hand. And just like in every other emergency, that's just what Mississippi did. "Mississippi Tornado Relief: Hope, Help & Healing" raised $212,222. Those donations will assist with long term recovery.

The Pine Belt Community Foundation established two organizations to aid with disaster relief. Columbia Strong and the Pine Belt Community Disaster Fund will receive your generous contributions. Both groups will work with tornado victims to get them the materials they need to recover and rebuild.

Your gifts made a teeth chattering Thursday amid piles of debris a lot warmer. As Raycom Media Group Vice President Sandy Breland noted, "It's a great reflection of the generosity of our communities."
