Columbia, MS (WLOX) - Every morning for the past two weeks began the same at Woodlawn Pentecostal Church in Columbia, MS. Ever since the tornado ripped through the town two days before Christmas, the church has acted as the heartbeat of volunteerism in the area.
Even though the church itself was damaged by the tornado, its Family Life Center is being used as the center of operations.
Hundreds of volunteers sleep upstairs and then wake up about 7 a.m. They are then fed a hearty, hot breakfast served up by other volunteers.
Then, they head out to work, cleaning up the mess left behind by the twister. One of the church's pastors says he's amazed at the giving and loving spirit displayed by these volunteers, who have come from across the country to help the city and county recover.
Doug Walker is in Columbia today covering the story. Watch for it tonight on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
