Coast seniors getting in shape for the New Year

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

If you're a senior who wants to get in shape, swimming is one of the best options, and it's never too late to work on improving your health. There are indoor pools with classes available during the cold winter months.

Twice a week, no matter what the temperature is outside, seniors are taking the plunge and enjoying camaraderie, all while improving their health. Lavada Duplaine has been coming to the Silversplash water classes at E-Fitness for two years.

"I lost 30 pounds the first year I was here, and I'm maintaining it," said Duplaine.

At 80-years-old, Duplaine knows how important these exercise classes are to her health.

"I do all of Maxine's classes. She's not only a good instructor, she makes it fun," Duplaine said.

She's talking about her instructor, 62-year-old Maxine Crowell, who knows it's critical to make exercise fun.

"I find if you make it fun, people will come back. If you don't make it fun, they're not as likely to come back," said Crowell.

Class participants say Maxine's enthusiasm is contagious, and she uses her passion and knowledge to help others feel younger too.

Maxine says water exercise is the perfect choice for most seniors, because it's easy on the joints.

"The water is a good place, because you have buoyancy, and you're not working against gravity so much, and it cushions your joints so it's doesn't hurt them as much," said Crowell.

Joe Seidule, 89, knows how important it is to stay active. This retired mailman broke his hip last year and has to use a walker to get to the pool now. That doesn't keep him away from these classes. He says the water is the best place for him to exercise.

"Oh yea, that's why I'm in it, baby. Like everything else, you get out what you put into it," said Seidule.

It's that kind of attitude, along with Maxine's spirit, that helps keep Coast seniors on their toes and coming back for more.

Group classes are included in the E-Fitness membership, and there are discounted rates for seniors. Some health insurances companies help pay for fitness classes for seniors.
