GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Gayle Parker got her first job in Harrison County with the sheriff's department. That was 51 years ago. Since that first job, she's moved to other departments, but always stayed with the county. Today, Harrison County's Circuit Clerk is ready to retire.

"I've been thinking about it really seriously for the last six months," she told WLOX News.

Parker is Harrison County's six term incumbent circuit clerk. She's seen so many changes to the court system, and to voting. This year, for instance, Harrison County switched to computerized poll books. The changes, she admits, had her working more than she wanted.

Now, she sees relaxation on the horizon. But, only after her term expires and somebody is elected to take over as circuit clerk.

"We've still got a year to go," she said.

Her decision to retire comes one day after Jackson County Circuit Clerk Joe Martin made the same announcement.
