GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It's that time of year again. People are making the commitment to get fit as part of their New Year's resolutions. One group of trainers decided to get together to make that leap into fitness a little easier for people on the Coast.
Every gym owner and personal trainer knows what January brings to the table.
"Obviously, the beginning of the year, this is when everybody's making their decisions on how to get fit," said Linda Buford of Cycology Fitness.
She joined trainers from around the Coast to provide a day of free workouts in Jones Park in Gulfport. She said once people start, the challenge for trainers is keeping athletes motivated.
By bringing a diverse group of workouts together, including CrossFit, jiu jitsu, spinning and others, Buford has built a support group that should help anyone stay motivated.
"It's a community of people that are just, we love each other and we really work hard to help, no matter what your fitness level. It could be brand new people, or it could be your in shape athletes. We work with them all," said Buford.
She said a lot of times people get discouraged and give up soon after they start.
"Here's what's important. It's not going to happen overnight. You're not going to get results in a week," said Buford.
Her hope is to cater to the seasoned athlete and the beginner alike. That's good news for Eugene Hawthorne. He says it has been years since he worked out consistently.
"I said, 'Man, I need that. I need to go down there and do something about it this year,'" said Hawthorne.
His motivation? Health, getting back in shape and looking good.
"I see these guys down here, and they're looking good," said Hawthorne.
So, he decided to give it a shot. Now, he's looking forward to the next workout.
"Life is too good not to exercise and take care of it," said Hawthorne.
Buford said she hopes to see more people motivated this year to stay healthy and fit and actually follow through with their resolutions.
