GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The cost to build the Kemper County power plant just keeps going up. Friday, Mississippi Power let the Public Service Commission know it will cost another $25 million to finish building the lignite plant. And the company admits in its monthly report that figure could go up another $50 million before construction is completed.
At the moment, Mississippi Power says the Kemper County plant's construction price tag is more than $6.1 billion. That's more than double what the company originally expected that plant would cost.
Company officials stress that Mississippi Power customers will not pay for any of the construction costs above the limit already set by the Mississippi Public Service Commission.
The lignite plan should be completed in the first half of 2016, more than a year later than Mississippi Power initially expected.
