PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

The holiday season is a stressful time for many families to make ends meet and buy gifts for family members, so members of VFW post 3373 got an idea to team up with the Pascagoula Police Department to help people in their community.

They started the morning going door to door to hand deliver a Christmas surprise.

"Hi, are you Karen," Bob Cochran asked.

"Yes," Karen answered with a puzzled look on her face.

"Karen, my name is Bob Cochran. I'm with the Pascagoula Police Department, and I have someone from VFW Post 3373 that'd like to talk to you," Cochran said.

"Hi Karen. My name is Dave Pettys. I'm with the post 3373 Veterans for Foreign Wars, and on behalf of our membership, we'd like to give you two gift cards for Walmart for $50 each," Pettys said with a smile on his face.

"Oh my God! Thank you so much," Karen exclaimed.

After making a few house deliveries, they made their way to the streets. Officers pulled over random drivers who thought they were going to get a traffic violation.

Instead, were handed a Christmas Eve gift.

"On behalf of the VFW membership, I'd like to give you a gift certificate for Walmart," Pettys said as he handed a gift card to a driver.

"Good gracious alive! Boy," the driver said with a big grin.

"Out of any other time, I sure could use it. Thank you so much. God bless," another driver said.

Seeing the smiles and even the tears of the thankful recipients makes the gift of giving worthwhile to the men who choose to serve their community daily.

"Those are tears of joy, and I absolutely love it," Pettys said.

A total of 52 gift cards worth $50 each were handed out Wednesday by the VFW 3373 post.
