KILN, MS (WLOX) - The Hancock County organization Friends of McLeod Park is about to watch its second dream for the Texas-Flat Road camp ground in the Kiln come true.
It's a $150,000 playground designed to complement the natural beauty found at Riverside Park.
The old playground equipment that once stood in the heart of McLeod Park had been there for more than four decades. It was recently demolished to make room for safer, more modern equipment.
"The playground that was here had been here since the early 70s. It's something I played on as a kid and my kids played on it, so it was time for an upgrade. Hopefully, the kids that come here today will be able to bring their kids back," said Kevin Ladner, Director of Parks and Recreation.
Three separate structures will make up the new playground. It will include four rock climbing walls, ten sets of monkey bars, five tunnels and a swing set.
"The old playground that we had here had two slides on it. This one will have seven slides on this new playground. It's not going to be your everyday playground you find on every corner," said Ladner.
"I'm very excited about this," said April Perkins, with Friends of McLeod Park.
Perkins is one of the founding members of Friends of McLeod Park. The organization raised a chunk of the funds needed to pay for the new equipment. Tideland trust money, as well as funds from the Pearl River Basin, also helped.
"It's going to be beautiful. It's going to be something the kids can't wait to run to and play on," Perkins said.
A contractor will put the equipment together and install it, but Friends of McLeod Park will hold a community volunteer day to help spread mulch. That will take place Wednesday, Jan. 14. Volunteers will be served a free lunch.
If you'd like to help, contact McLeod Park at 467-1894.
The new playground will officially open after a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m.
