VT Halter fined by OSHA for June crane collapse

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula has been cited by the United States Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Five citations have been issued as a result of a crane collapse in June that left five employees injured. Four of those citations were classified as serious and one was other than serious.

The serious violations noted by OSHA include absence of load charts being posted or visible, a load cell sensor on the main hoist line cable not being fully operational, exceeding its rated load capacity while making a tandem lift and travel maneuver and designated personnel not ensuring proper position of the crane observers and movement of the crane.

The other than serious violation includes not knowing the safe lifting limits for three of four slings and identification tags not being legible.

The total proposed penalty by OSHA is $29,000.

VT Halter Marine has 15 working days to contest the citations or pay the penalty fees.
