The victim from Wednesday morning's fatal fire in Pascagoula has been identified as Christy Brock, 44. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said Brock died of smoke inhalation at the home on Cleveland Avenue.
It took firefighters hours to put out the flames. When they arrived, the fire was already fully involved, and Brock's body wasn't discovered until later.
"We have to do a risk analysis when we get to a fire like this," said Deputy Chief Donnie Carlson. "And, with that room in that kind of shape, I honestly believe that it was probably a little too late."
Carlson had to pull his men out because intense flames had already taken over the northwest bedroom. He had a feeling that if anyone was still in the room, they probably weren't alive.
"At that point we kind of took a defensive approach towards it," said Carlson.
Officials still have not said what caused the fire.
"It's going to take us a while to dig through all the ashes and the burnt stuff and piece it all back together," said Carlson.
