D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Nearly 100 women stopped by Alan Belcher Mixed Martial Arts Sunday, for a free lesson in self-defense. The class was hosted by one of the gym's world champion Jiu Jitsu fighters, who happens to be a woman.
She scheduled the free seminar, after a woman was attacked on the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge last month. She wanted women to learn self-defense skills that could prevent another situation like that from occurring.
“I love to share this with women, because they think that they can't defend themselves, but it's not true. You just need the right knowledge and the right practice,” said Sanford.
During Sanford's two hour seminar, she talked about listening to your gut, and always being prepared to defend yourself. Something Courtney Tillman says is easy to forget.
“It made me more aware of my surroundings, got to pay attention, because sometimes you can get in your zone working out and you forget about what's going on,” said Tillman.
The moves being taught, are designed to allow women to get away from their attacker, no matter how big or strong.
“I could teach you hundreds and hundreds of techniques, but I feel like if you understand the concept of where is the weak point in his grip, where are the weak points on the human body, where can he grab you, which strikes are most effective, what targets should I go after. These are things you're not going to forget,” said Sanford.
Alan Belcher says the gym will be hosting another free self-defense seminar in April, but also wants the public to know the gym offers free private self-defense lessons year round.
