JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The controversy surrounding Singing River Health System's pension plan and its lack of funding has raised some questions about public hospitals being exempt from the state's open meetings law.
Some believe state lawmakers should change that rule.
State Sen. Brice Wiggins says it is going to be an issue that will come up at the next legislative session, which begins in January.
"The situation at Singing River Health System, it's going on, not to this degree, it's going on in other parts of the state. That's why Sen. Collins introduced the bill last year, and the bottom line is transparency," said Wiggins. "You can't go wrong, in my opinion, with transparency. We are dealing with public funds, and you know I'm working on the bill. I'm in the process of drafting it. I'm looking at all aspects of the community hospital system."
