GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - Gautier fire officials tell us the woods fire they were working to extinguish Saturday afternoon near Robert Hiram Road is now 100 percent contained.
Gautier Fire Department Deputy Chief Derek McCoy said the burn area stretched to about 15 acres, but no structures were damaged.
McCoy said fire crews will return to the site of the blaze Sunday morning to make sure the chance of a rekindle is small.
Although the fire is contained, McCoy said it is important that anyone traveling through the area be aware that smoke could still impair your vision. Smoke hangs closer to the ground during the night time hours, and this could create a hazard for drivers.
McCoy said the recent dry conditions with minimal rainfall and low humidity greatly increase the chances of a fire getting out of hand. He suggests avoiding an open burn, but if you must spark a fire, you must have at least one way to quickly extinguish the flames if they get out of hand.
McCoy said those who do choose to open burn need to understand they are liable for any property damaged received due to their actions.
