GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport church lives out the Christmas spirit of giving every weekend. Several families have meals on their tables this week when they otherwise wouldn't thanks to Faith Missionary Baptist Church.
A few families walked into the Food Giant on Highway 49 not knowing what was in store for them before they even hit the produce section.
"God has blessed our church, and we are out to bless someone else," said Cassie Johnson.
She and other church members help in spreading the cheer that the Christmas season brings by helping people pay their grocery bills.
This ministry is a weekly tradition for the church, but every Christmas, even more families are given the ability to put more food on the table.
"To see how people can be blessed, and when we hand them those checks to think about what else they could possibly buy. It is a blessing," said Johnson.
She takes pride in the fact that her church's leadership is adamant on getting people out in the community to help.
She says it's easy to go out and spend money on yourself if you have the resources, but using your resources to help others is what she says the Christmas season is really about.
"This is a way that we have actually to give back to the community. To let people know what we're all about," said Johnson.
This ministry helps people like Liz Spell. She said she tries to give back at every opportunity, and to see that kindness coming back around fills her with joy.
"I was shocked, because it's a blessing. I've never been approached, you know, and it's a blessing whenever people are willing to help one another out. Especially this time of year," said Spell.
According to Spell, this generosity will give her a lot to be thankful for this Christmas.
"All I can say is that it's a blessing from God," said Spell.
In addition to its weekly grocery store gifts, Faith Missionary Baptist also fills up several cars and provides free fried fish as a part of its ministry.
